Edington and Tinhead W.I June News
Tuesday June 10th saw the Parish Hall abandoned, as members made their way to the Brewery Bar at The Three Daggers Inn for a demonstration by head chef Adrian Jenkins.
We were pleased to welcome one new member and two visitors.
Adrian showed us a variation on a winter favourite-minestrone soup. This was made with fresh, seasonal and local vegetables [apart from the Spanish onion!] Into the pot went baby carrots and broad beans, young courgettes, chard and the leaves and bulb of young, mild garlic. The finishing touch was a pesto of cashew nuts and parsley, stirred through just before serving.
As Adrian diced and sliced he told us a little about his culinary background and answered members’ questions. There was a mug of this delicious soup for all of us, before moving on to the business part of our meeting.
We heard about events that members had attended recently. Several ladies spent a very interesting day at “Meet Adam Henson” in Trowbridge. The well known Countryfile presenter talked about his inherited love of farming and the countryside, his interest in rare breeds and the importance of knowing where meat has come from. Members also heard from the founder of the” Send a Cow” charity that supports communities, mostly in Africa, become self sufficient; the calf in time is given to another family whilst the milk products provide food.
In May twelve members joined in an outing to Stonehenge when were very fortunate to be joined by a local resident and English Heritage guide, Sonia Heywood.
Sonia took some of us on an extensive walk around the Stones explaining many aspects of the landscape, telling us which “theories” about various topographical features have now been discounted and which are thought to be valid. The revamped site meant that there was something for all of us regardless of age or physical ability; we all enjoyed the new Visitor Centre; some members did part of the walk only, and some travelled to the Stones on the link bus.
Everyone enjoyed lunch afterwards at The Boot, Berwick St. James.
Next month our speaker will be Francesca Stavrokopoulou on, A Woman in History and Television.
We are always happy to have visitors so do come along if an advertised talk or event appeals to you.
Most W.I. events organised by the Wiltshire Federation are open to non members; see our notice board in the Parish Hall.
