Gardening Club October news

Edington & District Gardening Club 1st Thursday in the month at the Parish Hall 7.30pm

Looking at the rain, it seems quite a while ago we had such wonderfully sunny warm days. That was just what we had on our trip to Wisley. We were joined by friends, and members from Cheverell, and also Steeple Ashton Gardening Clubs. A good day was had by all!
The October meeting had a change of speaker due to unforeseen circumstances. However we were in for a treat. The 'Two Clives' from Warminster Bonsai Club came along at very short notice with their prize specimens.
Although they had not given a talk before they certainly knew their topic and have attended many shows meeting and chatting to the public on their specialised topic.
China originally started bonsai but Japan took it on and have set the standard and terminology. The idea is to create the allusion of an old tree.
You can buy, import or find plants in hedges. Plants used can be juniper, blackthorn, acers, fuchsia, even potentilla or cotoneaster. It is important to put the plant in a deep big pot to start with to feed (shallow pots are for showing), the tap root is cut off so the feeder roots develop.
It was a fascinating subject and the 'Clives' years of experience and enthusiasm showed!
Do come along to our next meeting, November 7th, which has the topic of 'Putting the Garden to Bed' with David Robinson.
We will also be taking numbers for the Christmas Social evening during the evening.
