Edington and District Gardening Club news for February 2018

On the 7th.February the Gardening Club changed the location for the meeting from the Parish Hall which is being refurbished to the Brewery Bar at the Three Daggers. We were pleased that club members found us and in particular our speaker Lyn Miles did too, from Boscombe village Lyn came to speak

FOR THE LOVE OF SNOWDROPS

Galanthus or snowdrops as they are popularly known are a special favourite of Lyn’s in her garden where she has over 200 varieties, doubles and singles.

We were told that they are early food for bees, the pollen being particularly orange in colour but to keep the plants in good condition devide them regularly.

Apart from Lyn’s garden which is open to the public on Thursdays in February, Lacock is another snowdrop place to visit. Snowdrop Galas used to be held where 200 visitors would be welcomed from many countries. These plants can be very expensive, one selling for £500.00 a bulb many selling for £20.00 each.

Lyn arrived with slides for us to view and a collection of bulbs and goodies to purchase. She admits her garden is a wilderness garden but if you visit you could be sure of getting delicious cakes and tea. Did you know there is also a snowdrop wine?

Our next meeting will be 7th. March. Also to be held at the Brewery at 7.30pm.

Chris Smith will speak on HERITAGE VEGETABLES
