ALL VISITORS WELCOME AT OUR MEETINGS
Our meeting in November saw Trevor Pictor, from the White Horse Pottery, explain how he got involved in his pottery business of 20 years, and the building in which he now lives and works in Westbury.
It was interesting to learn about the different chemicals in the natural clay changing the colour of the finished product, for example iron in the clay changes this unique product to blue and copper changes it to green.
The drying and firing of the pots is lengthy and important for the finished process.
He brought clay and a portable wheel to demonstrate how to “throw” a pot. Centring the clay quickly and getting rid of the “wobble” looked easier than it is.
It was fascinating to watch a lump of clay being “thrown” upwards into a beautiful shape.
Thanks were given by Sandra Salmons.
Our president Helen welcomed a visitor, 2 new members and our new WI adviser Lesley Holdway who talked about her role and highlighted various WI events/items including:
“Moodle” days in March 2014 where WI members can learn about using the CountyFederation website more easily;
The Denman Road show coming to Warminster in 2014 highlighting the courses on offer at the DenmanCollege in Oxfordshire and
A request to choose our preferred Resolution to be discussed at the National Annual Meeting in 2014.
The November/December 2013 edition of WI Life contains the 4 Resolutions, one of which will be taken forward for discussion and final voting.
Helen reported on the Autumn Council meeting held in October in Salisbury where the main speaker, Gail Morecambe, the daughter of Eric Morecambe, spoke about life with a larger than life father.
The Federation Calendar for 2015 will be focusing on “Wiltshire Wildlife” and seasonal recipes. The deadline for entries for this is 31st December 2013.
There are various events happening in the county highlighted in our WI News over the next few months.
We can sign up for them in the green folder at meetings or by contacting Clare Brown.
Our “Soup and Pud” lunch, on November 13th, to raise awareness of the “Great Food Debate” was a success with many warm comments about the whole event.
The raffle was very good with star prize being a Christmas cake made and decorated by 2 of our members. We were also fortunate to have a donation from the shop at Bratton, flour products from Wessex Mill and a Xmas menu of one person meals from Wiltshire Farm Foods as well as a brace of pheasants provided by one of our members.
Thanks to the soup and pud makers of the committee!
We are serving soup to invited WI people from around the county before they attend the County Christmas Carol Concert on December 4th at Edington Priory.
Our December meeting is a meal with friends/partners at the Three Daggers Pub on December 10th, 7pm for 7.30pm.
On Tuesday 14 January 2014 Julie Abbott will talk about “Silk Screen Printing”.
Our yearly subscription is due in January. It will be £34.70 for 2014. This still offers good value for money for each month.
We are a friendly group of people, so why not come along and join us, you will be most welcome.
