Our seventh Choral Workshop will be led by Simon Carrington, founder member of The Kings Singers, Emeritus Professor of Choral Conducting at Yale University in the States, and now a very busy freelancer conductor and highly sought-after workshop leader around the world.  So how lucky are we, that we have managed to find a gap in his busy schedule  to lead a workshop in the Priory Church!

We will be exploring  two short-ish 20th century British works from two contrasting composers, Elgar and Britten.

Edward Elgar’s ‘Great is the Lord’, a 10 minute setting of Psalm 48, is a vintage piece, but not that often performed.  It has a hefty organ accompaniment, to be provided by our friend Chris Totney, Director of Music at St John’s Church, Devizes, and a lovely bass solo, to be sung by Thomas Bennett, familiar to Edington through his participation in the Music Festival and as part of Operatunity, who will have sung for us in May.  It may only be 10 minutes long, but it’s a great sing.

Benjamin Britten’s ‘Rejoice in the Lamb’, composed in 1943, is an astonishing setting of an extraordinary poem by the 18th century mystical poet Christopher Smart, written while he was in an asylum. It  depicts idiosyncratic praise and worship of God by all created beings and things, each in its own way.  Four soloists and an organ join the choir to create a totally magical, tuneful and rhythmic musical experience. It lasts about 17 minutes.

If you can read music, and have some choral experience, and are interested in tackling something possibly outside your usual choral experience under one of the leading international choral conductors, then this workshop is for you.  There will be a run-through of both pieces at the end of the workshop for the benefit of family and friends, followed by tea and cakes.

Application forms will be available for download in April from the Edington Arts website.
