Edington and District Gardening Club – July and August news

As you read this we are preparing for our Edington Village Flower & Produce Show which will take place on 9th September. We really look forward to this day and hope you will all come along to support the event. Entries close on the 8th September so if you have produce you are proud of, whether flowers, fruit or vegetables, or you can preserve, bake, photograph or make craft items, do look at the village website for entry information or call at Edington Post Office (9-12 weekdays). It doesn’t matter where you live as all entries are most welcome. If you would rather take a look than take part, come along and see the entries and enjoy Wendy’s wonderful baking and teas.

On July 6th Quoins Vineyard of Bradford-on-Avon gave us a treat with a talk and a very popular wine tasting. We learnt how the business was started on a slope near Bradford, the ups and downs and trials and errors of development, towards this now successful and award-winning vineyard. We  discovered that the Southern half of the country now delivers successful grape harvests which are holding their own with overseas competition. Traditionally British wine comprised almost all white wine, but nowadays with increased viticulture experience helped along by climate change, both rose and red wines are being produced in larger quantities and of good quality. Members were surprised at the range and quality of wine on offer and pleased to hear that Waitrose is now stocking Quoins wine, so do take a look. We enjoyed the treat and were able to buy discounted wine on the night. No doubt more will follow when we go for a visit to Quoins Vineyard for an evening  tour and more tasting on 21st September. Do let us know if you would like to come along.

We have had some really lovely trips so far this year, including our most recent one to the National Trust’s Barrington Court near Ilminster, where we toured the house as well as enjoying a guided tour of the extensive Gertrude Jekyll-designed gardens. As is often the case on our visits, we were able to tour parts of the garden not usually open to the public, and the Victorian outhouses, greenhouses and cold frames were a particular treat.

If you would like any information about gardening club please look at the village website or give us a call. We normally meet on the first Thursday of the month at Edington Parish Hall and visitors are always welcome.
